The San Antonio Spurs made one of the most unexpected moves of the 2022-23 season of the NBA by releasing Joshua Cousinwho had just been selected in the first round of the 2021 draft and was seen as one of the organization’s top prospects.
Next, we tell you everything about Primo and the reasons for his departure.
He is a 19-year-old player from Toronto, Canada. He made his high school career at West Virginia and excelled as a five-star recruit, choosing to play for the SEC’s Alabama Crimson Tide. He only played one season, averaging 8.1 points and missing part of the season with an ankle injury.
After solid results in the NBA Combine, he presented himself to the NBA Draft in 2021 and was chosen by the Spurs in the 12th position of the first round. He made his debut in October of the same year and filled a rotation role under Gregg Popovich.
Primo played a total of 54 games with the Spurs, 19 of them as a starter, registering an average of 5.9 points and 2.3 rebounds per game. He only played four times during the 2022-23 season and everything seemed to indicate that his role would continue to grow, playing about four more minutes per game and assuming a relief role from Devin Vassell.
Unexpectedly, the Spurs announced on October 28 the termination of Primo’s contract and although the reasons for his departure were not initially stated, it was evident that it was not something based on sports. The player and team issued statements, announcing that Primo would undergo mental health treatment due to “past trauma.”
It was not long before it became known that Primo had exposed himself to several women within the organization, which caused his immediate dismissal. It is unknown if there will be legal action against the young player, after one of the sources of what happened was the lawyer Tony Buzbee, who is known for the series of lawsuits against the NFL star, Deshaun Watson.
