After the end of the 2020/21 season that included the Eurocup as a tournament of nations, the UEFA is ready to announce who was the best footballer on the Old Continent. Unlike what usually happens, this time the big surprise is that there are no strikers in the shortlist that was published but that there are three midfielders who are in the fight to keep the award.

N’Golo Kanté, Jorginho and Kevin De Bruyne have been nominated for the title of European Player. The first two, teammates at Chelsea, won the Champions League together, after a final in which the Frenchman was chosen figure of the match after having also been in the semifinals, both in the first leg and in the second leg.

For its part, Jorginho closed his successful season with the European Championship title with Italy, while the Belgian De Bruyne He had a great campaign with Manchester City, becoming champion of England and reaching the Champions League final.

One of these three players, chosen after a vote in which coaches and journalists have participated, will be awarded on August 26 during the gala for the next Champions League draw, in Istanbul, Turkey, thus succeeding the Polish Robert Lewandowski (Bayern Munich).

In addition, the award for the best UEFA player of the year will be awarded to a FC Barcelona player who won the Champions League: Jennifer Hermoso, Lieke Martens and Alexia Putellas are the three nominees for this award. For the trophy for the best coach, Thomas tuchel (Chelsea), Roberto Mancini (Italy selection) and Pep Guardiola (Manchester City) are the candidates.

This is a window into what will happen at the ceremony of The Best and in that of Golden Ball. Lionel messi, champion with Argentina of the Copa América, will surely be in the shortlist and will be accompanied by two footballers. Due to the UEFA nominations it can be predicted that between N’Golo Kanté, Jorginho and Kevin De Bruyne will be the two who will accompany him in that race.
