“I’m still here. To me, that’s all noise right now,” Tagovailoa said.
Last week, the NFL suspended Dolphins owner Stephen Ross until Oct. 17, fined him $1.5 million and stripped the team of a first-round pick in the 2023 draft and a third-round pick in the 2023 draft. 2024 draft for talking to Brady while he was under contract with the Patriots in 2019 and Buccaneers in 2021.
The league’s investigation determined that the Dolphins had impermissible communications with both Brady and his agent, Don Yee, no later than early December 2021 and after the season, while he was under contract with the Buccaneers.
Those discussions centered on Brady becoming a limited partner with the Dolphins and possibly serving as a football executive, though at times they also included the possibility of him playing for the Dolphins. The league says Ross and Dolphins vice president/limiting partner Bruce Beal were involved in the discussions.
Brady, who turned 45 last week, briefly retired after last season. He hasn’t spoken to reporters since the league punished the Dolphins, but the seven-time Super Bowl champion spoke with Tagovailoa on the field.
“We were talking on one side for a long time,” Tagovailoa said. “Just asking how the offseason was. We were talking a little about golf at the same time. But for the most part, 23 years playing, that’s a long time. That’s a lot of knowledge, so I was asking him a few questions and he gave me a good idea. I’m going to keep that between Tom and me. So if they want to ask Tom, they can go ask him.”
Tagovailoa said Brady’s “serenity in the pocket” impressed him more.
“Nothing really makes him nervous. When you have a guy in the face, he just makes subtle movements and throws the ball,” Tagovailoa said. “I would say those are the main qualities of a good quarterback with him, Russ (Russell Wilson), Aaron Rodgers, all those great guys.”
The Dolphins and Buccaneers will practice again on Thursday before their first preseason game on Saturday night.
Dolphins first-year coach Mike McDaniel downplayed Brady’s story.
“For me, nothing happened,” he said. “Everyone else is what makes it uncomfortable. He doesn’t take up an iota of space with anyone. It’s hard enough to be good in this league. Like the Miami Dolphins, all of our energy is very coordinated and it’s just about getting better and anything else would be an opportunity cost that we’re not willing to spend.”
