MEXICO CITY.- The Super Wild Card Weekend begins with two games on Saturday, continues with three main games on Sunday and ends with the debut of a Wild Card game on Monday night.
The 2021 postseason kicks off Saturday on the heels of the most exciting regular season in NFL history. The NFL teams were combined like this in the 2021 season:
34 games defined in the final play, the most in history;
49 winning results with touchdowns in the last minute of regulation or overtime, tying for the most in a season in history;
57 game-winning touchdowns in the last two minutes of regulation or overtime, also tying for the most in NFL history.
Super Wild Card Weekend features stable, quality teams led by consistent veterans, and young, rising clubs led by sensational newcomers.
Each of the past six NFL Drafts has contributed a starting quarterback to this weekend’s games: Patriots’ MAC JONES (round one, 2021), Bengals’ JOE BURROW (round one , 2020), JALEN HURTS, of the Eagles (second round, 2020), KYLER MURRAY, of the Cardinals (first round, 2019), JOSH ALLEN, of the Bills (first round, 2018), PATRICK MAHOMES, of the Chiefs ( first round, 2017), and DAK PRESCOTT, of the Cowboys (fourth round, 2016).
And, with six starting quarterbacks not yet 27 years old, the 2021 playoff outlook is expected to tie for the second-most quarterbacks in league history. Only the 2020 postseason, with seven, had more.
The weekend also features TOM BRADY, guiding a Tampa Bay team looking to snap the NFL’s 17-year streak without a repeat Super Bowl champion, the longest streak in league history. Since Brady and the Patriots won back-to-back Super Bowl titles in 2003 and 2004, no NFL team has repeated as world champion.

FROM TEAM WILD CARD TO WIN THE SUPER BOWL. Last year the Buccaneers took their first postseason step toward an eventual Super Bowl title by winning a Wild Card game as a Wild Card team (not a division winner). Since the Wild Cards entered the playoffs in 1978, Tampa Bay became the seventh Wild Card team to win the Super Bowl. Will we see another Wild Card team at Super Bowl LVI in Los Angeles?
REVENCHES. Five of the six Wild Card Super Weekend games are rematches of 2021 regular season games. No other round of Wild Cards in league history had as many rematches.
Don’t expect the team that won the regular season game to get a win in the Wild Card game. Eight teams in the past five years have come back from at least one regular-season loss to an opponent to avenge that loss in the Wild Card round.
Last season alone, the BALTIMORE RAVENS defeated Tennessee while the CLEVELAND BROWNS defeated Pittsburgh, and the LOS ANGELES RAMS beat Seattle after winning one game apiece in the regular season.
REPEAT PERFORMANCES FOR MONDAY NIGHT WINNERS
The Rams host the Cardinals in the first postseason game played on a Monday since the Rams lost to the Minnesota Vikings in a Wild Card game on December 26, 1988. The winner of this Monday’s game will have the history of his side in the Divisional round.
During the 2021 regular season, teams that won on a Monday finished 13-2-1 the following Sunday.
Over a longer period, dating to week 14 of the 2020 season, clubs that won a game on a Monday combined for a 16-2-1 record the following Sunday.
BEWARE OF AWAY TEAMS
Visiting clubs have won 10 of the last 14 NFL Wild Card games over the past three seasons, including four of the six Wild Card games last year. Since the 2017 playoffs, visiting teams are 12-6. And, in eight of the last nine seasons, at least one visiting team has won a Wild Card game.
