As a preview of the 2022 NFL Season, the sports portal ESPN conducted a survey of more than 50 American football league executives, as well as coaches, scouts and players, to help rank the best 10 players in 11 different positions, from outside quarterback rushers, to inside offensive linemen.

This is the third annual edition of these rankings, and there are several players who have moved up or down our list from last year’s list. Today one focuses on the quarterbacks.

THE TOP 10

The best QBs in the NFL for 2022 23 Tabasco

1 Aaron Rodgers

Green Bay Packers

Highest ranking: 1 | Lowest ranking: 5

Age: 38 | Ranking last year: 2

The playbook for Rodgers here has been clear the past couple of seasons: Win an MVP award, move up one spot in the Top-10. Rodgers ranked third in 2020, behind Patrick Mahomes and Russell Wilson, after consecutive years of mid-table production, by his standards. Then he cleared his game with one of the most efficient two-year stretches ever: 8,414 passing yards, 85 touchdown passes, nine interceptions and a 69.8 percent completion rate on 1,057 attempts.

2 Patrick Mahomes

Kansas City Chiefs

Highest ranking: 1 | Lowest ranking: 5

Age: 26 | Ranking last year: 1

This year presents an interesting challenge for Mahomes, who fell to second place after two consecutive years at the top by a wide margin in the voting. He will try to claim the top spot for himself without his best wide receiver, Tyreek Hill, who was traded to Miami during the offseason.

3Josh Allen

buffalo bills

Highest ranking: 1 | Lowest ranking: 7

Age: 25 | Ranking last year: 5

Allen narrowly edged out Tampa Bay’s Tom Brady for third place, with many deciding the tiebreaker based on the following: Should he build a team and play in 2022, Allen helps win in more ways than one. “You can make an argument that he’s a top-5 player in the league right now,” an NFL personnel evaluator said. “He’s incredibly tough, and his ability to run and throw is a problem.”

4 Tom Brady

Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Highest ranking: 1 | Lowest ranking: 8

Age: 44 | Ranking last year: 3

Evaluators were poised to remove Brady from the league in 2020, when he ranked seventh on the list, noting that the power in his arm had been lost. Two years later, Brady competed for a second straight Top-3 ranking after another MVP-caliber performance. He had the most passing yards (5,316) and touchdown passes (43) in the NFL last season, and his Total QBR of 68.1 was second only to Rodgers. After a brief offseason retirement, Brady returns for his 23rd season as he prepares to turn 45 years old.

5 Joe Burrow

Cincinnati Bengals

Highest ranking: 2 | Lowest rank: Outside Top-10

Age: 25 | Ranking last year: Honorable mention

Burrow’s signature moment in the eyes of voters isn’t a beautiful pass or a pocket escape. It’s seeing him continually punished by the Titans’ defensive line, and getting the win anyway. “I hate to compare someone to Brady, but he might be the closest thing,” said a veteran NFL offensive coach. “What, there were nine sacks in that playoff game [ante Tennessee]? He didn’t flinch. She stayed there. There’s a toughness to him and the ability to think throughout the game.”

6 Matthew Stafford

Los Angeles Rams

Highest ranking: 3 | Lowest rank: Outside Top-10

Age: 34 | Ranking last year: 6

Yeah, that no-see pass in the Super Bowl was as good as it looked. “Many of those unseen are on the move, out of pocket; but this one was in the pocket, it looks like he’s going to throw to the flat zone, he throws to the curl and the safety (Vonn Bell of Cincinnati) is frozen, ”said an NFL coordinator. “It’s not about the coaches. He is a special player making a special play.”

7 Justin Herbert

Los Angeles Chargers

Highest ranking: 5 | Lowest rank: Outside Top-10

Age: 24 | Ranking last year: 9

Back in December, when Herbert rolled deep to his right and calmly let go a pass that traveled 61.2 yards in the air (according to NFL Next Gen Stats) across the field for a Jalen Guyton touchdown against the Bengals, I posted a screenshot via text message to a top NFL executive. “You’ll be less and less surprised as you go along,” he told me. “He will be the best quarterback in the game.”

8 Russel Wilson

Denver Broncos

Highest ranking: 4 | Lowest rank: Outside Top-10

Age: 33 | Ranking last year: 4

Although Wilson’s status among the elite has been assured for most of the decade, his place in the quarterback pantheon comes with question marks. He hasn’t had a great 18 months on the field, that’s for sure. The 2020 “Let Russ Cook” move provided fireworks in the first half of the season, but only 203.2 passing yards per game through the final seven games as defenses adjusted to his long passes. Then in 2021, Wilson posted a career-low 54.7 Total QBR, though a finger injury that required surgery during the season clearly affected his production. He was missing layup passes, the easy passes that he always landed.

9 Deshaun Watson

cleveland browns

Highest ranking: 4 | Lowest rank: Outside Top-10

Age: 26 | Ranking last year: Not available

Watson’s status for 2022 remains unknown. She has faced 25 civil lawsuits from massage therapists alleging sexual misconduct or sexual assault. Twenty of those cases have been settled out of court, and one was dropped. The four that remain active are scheduled to be litigated next spring.

10 Dak Prescott

Dallas Cowboys

Highest ranking: 7 | Lowest rank: Outside Top-10

Age: 28 | Ranking last year: 7

Voters pointed to Prescott’s consistency, helping him outperform other front-row quarterbacks here. Although the Cowboys’ quarterback didn’t receive a single Top-5 vote, he was locked in the Top-7 to Top-10 range, helping him move past Baltimore’s Lamar Jackson for the final spot. “A good, but not great, quarterback; he needs to play well in the playoffs,” an NFC executive said. “He has to prove that he can take them to the next level. He is not in the highest stratum.”
