Shock or shock? The Tua Tagovailoa case ignites the debate again

Sports Writing, Oct 7 (EFE).- Aaron Rodgers‘quarterback’ of the Green Bay Packersaffirmed this Friday from London that players must be more vigilant to determine the effects of a blow and help the NFL to activate the protocols of attention in cases of concussion.

“I’m not defending the NFL, but I don’t know what else it can do. I think we all know the difference between getting hit and being concussed. There’s definitely a difference and as players we need to start watching ourselves more,” Rodgers said.

The procedure for treating concussions sustained in games in the third and fourth weeks of the season by Tua Tagovailoaquarterback of the Miami Dolphinshas called into question the effectiveness of the NFL’s concussion protocol.

Under that procedure, Tagovailoa suffered a concussion in the second quarter of the game with the Bills. He left the field, but returned to finish the duel, for which the Players Association (NFLPA) opened an investigation.

A week later the player suffered a new concussion that took him to the hospital. Although he was released the same day, the quarterback will not be able to play this week because he is still suffering from headaches.

After the second concussion, the NFLPA fired the medical consultant who allowed Tagovailoa to finish the game against the Bills.

Aaron Rodgers reiterated that most of the time the player knows when a blow to the head is dangerous.

“I’ve had a few hits on the field and there’s a difference, so I say we all have to think about ourselves a little bit because there are the consequences of CTE,” Rodgers explained.

Chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) is a degenerative brain disease that for years the NFL refused to link to head injuries that former players suffered after their retirement, although several investigations indicated otherwise.

Tua Tagovailoa’s concussions prompted the NFL and NFLPA to announce changes to current concussion protocol to improve player care.

Quarterback Aaron Rodgers spoke at a press conference in London, where this Sunday the Green Bay Packers will face the New York Giants at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, in the second international game the NFL has scheduled outside the United States this season.

In the first, played last Sunday, the Vikings beat the Saints 28-25. Of the three remaining games, in addition to the Packers-Giants game outside the United States, one is missing in London, one in Munich and one in Mexico City.
