Report: Saints select Dennis Allen as new head coach

Sean Payton was the head coach of the New Orleans Saints for the past 15 years., but decided to end their relationship at the end of the 2021 NFL campaign. Mickey Loomis, general manager of the team got to work and he found his replacement.

According to the report by Adam Schefter, of ESPN, the Saints chose Dennis Allen as their new head coach. Other candidates interviewed by the Saints included Brian Flores, Doug Pederson, Aaron Glenn, Eric Bieniemy and Darren Rizzi.

Allen spent the last six seasons as defensive coordinator for the New Orleans franchise.. From 2018 to 2021, the Allen-led defenses have been in the Top 5 in rushing yards and the passing defense has improved year over year.

Second chance as head coach

If the reports are confirmed, This will be Allen’s second chance as an NFL head coach. From 2012 to 2014 he was the head coach of the then Oakland Raiders. His first two seasons went 4-12 and in the third he was fired after losing the first four games of the season.

Despite this, Allen has vast experience as a coach since he has dedicated the last 25 years to this activity, 19 of them in the NFL. His coaching career began as an assistant for the Texas A&M Aggies, his alma mater, in 1996 at the age of 24. In 2000, he became the defensive secondary coach for the Tulsa Golden Hurricane.

The Atlanta Falcons gave him his first opportunity in the NFL as an assistant defensive quality control in 2002 and beginning in 2006 as a defensive assistant with the Saints. Allen left New Orleans in 2011. to be the defensive coordinator for the Denver Broncos, a year before becoming the Raiders’ head coach.
