Red alert in the 2021 Dolphins

After 6 weeks of the NFL regular season, the Miami Dolphins are 1-5 with a record and in the basement of AFC East. This week they had a painful loss to one of the worst teams in the league, the Jacksonville Jaguars, in the second league international game of this regular season in London.

But what happened to the Dolphins in these first six weeks? How did they go from being a possible playoff candidate before the season started to shaping up to have one of the first picks in the 2022 NFL Draft?

Brian Flores just a season ago painted as a good prospect as a coach, a disciple of Bill Belichick who would be successful and who would be the exception to the rule. However, today, it seems that he will be one more coach who has his hours counted within the NFL.

Of course Miami’s problems go beyond the coaching staff. With a rather poor offensive line, the Dolphins have had a lot of trouble protecting their quarterback, be it Tua Tagovailoa or Jacoby Brissett. Defense seems to be on and off: performing well in some games (or quarters) and completely lowering your arms in others.

Tua, for his part, has struggled with countless decisive moments, and we still don’t see the promising quarterback the Dolphins so desperately need. After losing to a team that had gone twenty consecutive games without a win, the picture looks even more complicated for the Miami team.

While the AFC East has teams (except the Bills) with many problems, injuries and many deficiencies, the only game that Miami has won was defined more by the mistakes of the Patriots than by a good game plan. Tua needs to regain rhythm and confidence, something that looks very complicated with a very weak offensive line and Brian Flores must make better decisions in the game plan.

On matchday 6, Flores made very serious mistakes in the fourth quarter, with two wasted challenges and two quite questionable decisions on fourth chances. At times this season, the team even seems to be looking to sabotage itself.

While I don’t think they are at the bottom of the division, the season is looking increasingly difficult for the Dolphins.
