Rams take Baker Mayfield off waiver list, prevent him from reaching 49ers

Baker Mayfield is on its way to the Western Division of the National Conference, but not to the 49ers, as many anticipated, but to the Rams.

The Carolina Panthers released Mayfield on Monday, after the quarterbacks came out of their injuries Sam Darnold and PJ Walker. Baker was not going to be a starter, but the player thought he could help a team towards the end of the season, so they agreed to leave.

He dreamed of arriving in San Francisco after the injury of Jimmy Garoppolobut the waiver list works on reverse order of the record. The 49ers were ranked 24th, while the defending champions were in the ranked 3, behind only Houston and Chicago, passed from quarterback, so Baker was assigned to the rams.

ESPN reported that the 49ers did not request the player from the waiver list.

The Rams, virtually out with a 3-9 record, needed a quarterback with the hamstring injury. Matthew Stafford, who was placed on injured reserve, so he won’t return until week 17. Substitute John Wolford has also suffered multiple injuries, leaving only Bryce Perkins on the active roster. They needed another QB and I could also help them in the draft compensatory selection formula, since if Mayfield leaves in free agency, the Rams could receive a pick in exchange, and thus they do not help a direct rival of their division in the fight to reach the Super Bowl, in addition to the fact that there is some history between the franchises by the changes of Matthew Stafford and Christian McCaffrey in recent seasons.

Los Angeles plays the Thursday night against the Raiders. Mayfield will hardly play, but he could in Week 15 in Green Bay.

Baker Mayfield hasn’t had the best of years. After leading the Browns to the playoffs in the 2020 season and winning the franchise’s first postseason game since its revival in 1999, he suffered many injuries that limited him in 2021. That led the team not to give him a renewal and they were made in traded with Deshaun Watson, so they sent him to Carolina, where he sThey only won one game in six starts and completed just 57.8% of their passes, second worst among quarterbacks with at least six starts (Zach Wilson, 55.6%).
