The Pittsburgh Steelers (5-3-1) and Detroit Lions (0-8-1) achieved the first draw of the 2021 season in the NFL by ending the score 16-16 after extra time.
Surprisingly, The Steelers scored in their first offensive series with Mason Rudolph controlling the offense due to Ben Roethlisberger’s COVID-19 loss. The quarterback connected with wide receiver James Washington in the end zone. Two offensive drives later, Rudolph made the game’s first turnover by throwing a bad pass that linebacker Julian Okwara intercepted.
Detroit set up its running game at pleasure in torrential rain and in the second and third quarters reaped the rewards with a pair of touchdowns and a field goal. Jermar Jefferson ran for 28 yards in the second period and Godwin Igwebuike dodged opponents for 42 yards in the third. In total, the Lions rushed for 229 yards, 130 from D’Andre Swift.
After Igwebuike’s touchdown and failed two-point conversion, Pittsburgh tied the game at 16 with Chris Boswell’s two field goals of 23 and 51 yards. The rain intensified in the last minutes of the fourth quarter and the offenses did not generate yards forcing overtime.
In the extension, Diontae Johnson fumbled after gaining 39 yards on a long pass from Rudolph. However, Detroit did not take advantage and kicker Ryan Santoso missed a 48-yard field goal attempt.
Pittsburgh got another chance in overtime and the Rudolph-led offense advanced 51 yards until rookie Pat Freiermuth lost the ball. With eight seconds to play, the Lions attempted a fantasy play with side passes, but they didn’t get past the Steelers’ 40-yard line.

By Week 11, the Steelers will travel to Los Angeles to face the Chargers in the duel on Sunday night. For its part, the Lions will continue to tour and move to Cleveland to play against the Browns.
