Parsons will continue to have a versatile role in 2022

FRISCO, Texas – This is a relationship the Cowboys are perfectly happy not to rank or tag.

Coming off an NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year campaign in 2021, there is understandably talk about what Micah Parsons can do for the team.

And while there may be a lot of speculation about Parsons moving to defensive end, where he can show off his natural ability to rush the passer, the Cowboys want him to do a lot more than that.

“People who say, ‘Hey, why don’t you put him at defensive end?’ Very fair. That’s a very fair question,” Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy said. “But we’ve made it clear: we want it to move around.”

The questions arise from Parsons’ own body of work. He finished his rookie season with 13 sacks, displaying a level of versatility most people weren’t prepared for. With Randy Gregory sidelined with COVID-19 and DeMarcus Lawrence out with a broken foot in Week 2, the Cowboys asked Parsons to spend most of that game lined up on the rim. He responded with four hits at quarterback and a crucial sack that helped the Cowboys secure a 20-17 win over the Chargers.

That natural ability to rush the passer is undeniable. But as McCarthy pointed out, Parsons’ production didn’t come solely from the defensive end position.

“It would be very easy to just line him up at defensive end and play him there every snap, but the fact of the matter is he had, what, 13 sacks? Seven came from the linebacker position, six from the defensive end position,” he said.

It’s obvious the Cowboys value that type of personality. Parsons showed his aptitude for covering and attacking whoever has the ball, as well as a natural ability as a quarterback rusher. With defensive coordinator Dan Quinn back to coach Parsons for the second time, it makes sense if they want him to do as many things as possible.

McCarthy also said that seems to make him more of a problem for opposing offenses.

“I know as someone on the offensive end, you’re helping me if you can line him up one position at a time,” he added.

The saying goes: the more you can do, the better. The Cowboys seem to see the value in a player who can do a little of everything, as Parsons is.
