While it’s true that the Dallas Cowboys have their team ready for the second half of the season, that doesn’t mean they can’t look for new acquisitions. Also, there are certain exceptions to the rule, such as the eventual signing of OBJ and the return of veteran tackle Tyron Smith. As Stephen Jones himself has said many times, building a roster in the NFL is a job that takes 24 hours a day, all year round.

Now, a detail that caught the Cowboys’ attention on Friday is that they tested two specific players. One of them being Quarterback Jacob Eason, who would be a fourth-round pick in the 2020 Draft from the Colts. As such, he hasn’t had much of a career in the league, as the Colts themselves released him in 2021 and he ended up on the Seattle Seahawks’ practice squad. The Lone Star team knows him very well as he was one of the Quarterbacks who made an appearance in the last preseason matchup at AT&T Stadium. Where Dallas won 27-26 before facing off with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the regular season.

It is clearly a movement that looks somewhat strange, but everything has a logical explanation. Right now, the 53-man roster has three quarterbacks. Aside from Cooper Rush who managed to substitute on a high note for Dak Prescott during his injury, we also have Will Grier.

In Grier’s particular case, the QB had to be raised a total of three times from the practice squad to fill Cooper Rush’s backup quarterback spot. Therefore, he has already achieved the maximum number of selection and cannot be placed back in the practice squad. Faced with a possible signing of OBJ or, failing that, the return of Tyron Smith, he is going to need the position on the roster. And they certainly aren’t going to cut Cooper Rush, who went 4-1 in the absence of Dak Prescott. The item that will come out is Grier. And this leads to the organization having decided to do some tests with Eason.

Either way, if Jacob does end up in the organization, it will be on the practice squad. This is only as an emergency measure in case the Cowboys do not have their two required quarterbacks.

On the other hand, receiver Antonio Callaway was also doing tests during the day on Friday. In this offense’s case, he was also a fourth-round pick in the 2018 Draft, only from the Browns. In fact, he was a locker room partner of Odell Beckham Jr. during the 2019 season. Mind you, the wide receiver aside from Cleveland hasn’t been a fixture with any other NFL franchise. And he also had a short stint with the XFL’s Tampa Bay Vipers. Only that an injury to his lower leg did not even allow him to debut with this team.

Generally speaking, the last action Callaway has seen as a professional has been with the Kansas City Chiefs. Where he signed a future contract in January 2021 but would end up being released on August 26 of that same year.

Antonio could come to the organization as a clear element for special teams. Since for his rookie season, he managed to average a total of 12.2 yards per clearance and 17.9 of them per kick return action. In short, he could work perfectly as a backup to KaVontae Turpin if the latter ends up being used a bit more in the offensive game. But that would depend entirely on the results of the training sessions that the receiver had this Friday.
