COVID-19 and the start of the NHL season
The NHL and NHLPA announced changes to COVID-19 protocols for the upcoming season.
Under the new protocols, teams will be able to suspend unvaccinated players unable to participate in team activities due to their immunization status. Teams can force players to forgo pay in those circumstances. If a vaccinated player tests positive, he can continue to be paid even if he is unable to participate in team activities.
If a player exhibits symptoms of COVID-19, they will need to undergo a rapid test and quarantine until the results come back. If the first test is negative, the player must be tested daily for three days.
If a player tests positive, as long as they are asymptomatic, they can be released from isolation within the first five days once they have two consecutive negative test results. Symptomatic players who are in quarantine for six to nine days can be released from isolation with a negative test result as long as the test result is more than 24 hours after the last fever. Once someone comes out of quarantine in less than 10 days, they must wear a mask until 10 days have passed since the positive test.
Organizations are required to disclose to the media all positive cases of COVID-19. Commissioner Gary Bettman can still postpone, delay or move training camp or a portion of the NHL season if the league or the NHLPA believes continuing the season “would create or exacerbate a material risk to the health and safety of players or others and/or would jeopardize the integrity of the planned competition during the 2022-23 season.
