An NFL quarterback is leaving social media until further notice. On his Instagram account, Baker Mayfield of the Cleveland Browns announced that he will be leaving all social media platforms for the “foreseeable future.” This comes after the Browns finished the season with an 8-9 record and missed the playoffs.

“Get off all social media for the foreseeable future,” Mayfield said, according to TMZ Sports. “I have to do my best to focus on myself, my family and my loved ones. I appreciate all the support. It’s time to get it right.” Mayfield, who underwent shoulder surgery last week, did not have a 2021 season to remember, leading fans to criticize him. His wife, Emily, revealed that Mayfield received death threats on social media.

“It’s crazy how much negativity gets amplified through social media,” Emily wrote on her Instagram stories after the Browns lost to the Packers in December. “I still believe that there are more good people than bad, but WOW, social media makes me think otherwise sometimes. Which plays a big part in why I love spreading positivity. Our world needs more. The death threats, the lies. they tell me about my husband and the blatant DISRESPECT never ceases to amaze me.”

In 2020, Mayfield led the Browns to their first playoff appearance since 2002 and their first playoff win since the 1994 season. In that season, the Browns went 11-5 and Mayfield finished with 3,563 yards, 26 touchdowns and eight interceptions. He took a step back this season, throwing for 3,010 with 17 touchdowns and 13 interceptions. Mayfield’s shoulder surgery was to repair an injury he sustained late in the season.

“We will check that box to fix this, and now he is on the road to recovery,” Mayfield said in an Instagram video. “It will not be easy, but it will be one that I will remember and it will be special. I will keep you informed. Thanks a lot. This is not the end of my story.” It will be one of those things where I look back and remember one of those challenges and adversities that I will try to take advantage of and it will make me a better person.
