NFL Playoffs Overview in the AFC for Week 14 – 2021

Welcome this year to weekly NFL Playoffs by conference, in this case the AFC. The countdown to the Super Bowl LVI postseason has begun in the 18-week first season, so we begin to look at the landscape of the 2022 preseason.

We already said it in the introduction of the previous week: The AFC maintains a large number of teams above the average, but so far, none have stood out as favorites. Competitiveness is high in this league and there will be no qualifying for the next few weeks. However, some have higher expectations than others. Now, what are the franchises that will meet them? So far, only the Texans have been officially left out. Jaguars and Jets are likely to have the same luck this week.

Overview by division after week 13 in the AFC

AFC East

This division rediscovered a historic leader returning to fulfill his role. After seven consecutive victories (which includes the last divisional game against Bills), the Patriots (9-4) remain in first place. With a two-game lead over Buffalo and a 3-1 divisional record, the Pats are beginning to establish themselves as a solid team in this division.

The Bills (7-5) do not lose their illusions. Despite the tough defeat, they are currently seventh seeded and depend on themselves to add. Can they do it against the last NFL champions this week?

Lower are the Dolphins (6-7), who experience a great comeback after obtaining the last five games. They need to keep winning to dream of the NFL playoffs. Both they and NE will have a break this week. Lastly, the Jets (3-9) are on the verge of being eliminated if they lose to the Saints and other results occur.

AFC North

The North is a tough division and everyone has a chance to win it. However, the latest results have leveled the marks down. In any case, the Ravens (8-4) continue in the first position, followed by the Bengals (7-5), Steleers (6-5-1) and the Browns (6-6).

This week we will have one of the AFC’s standout games when Baltimore and Cleveland meet. While the lead is held by the former, both have a 1-2 divisional record, which would be a problem for both as a criterion for a divisional tiebreaker. On the other hand, the Bengals host 49ers and the Steelers travel to Minnesota in search of closing the gap with BAL.

AFC South

Like last year, the south is once again disputed between the same two franchises. First, the Titans (8-4) remain in first place after two tough losses. This week, they will try to rebuild the situation when they host the Jaguars (2-10) in the divisional game. If a positive result occurs for the locals, they not only secure a positive record this season, but they will mathematically leave their rivals out.

A little lower, the Colts are again (7-6). They will have a bye week for an offensive formation that has tools to lead the team to qualification. Underneath it all, the Texans (2-10) are the first team officially eliminated this season.

AFC West

Finally, another division that is red hot is the West. Although all teams have a good chance of making the playoffs, the Chiefs (8-4) are already taking care of being the favorites. After five wins and a 2-1 divisional record, Kansas City is once again in good standing and with a highly competitive team. If you ask me which four teams will make it to the divisional games, this is probably one.

Further back, the Chargers (7-5) are much better than last season and have expectations to live up to when they host the Giants this week. In third position, the Raiders (6-6) do not find certain regularity and will have to visit Kansas City in a very tough meeting. Lastly, the Broncos (6-6) are coming off a loss to the division leaders and need to pull themselves together this week in an accessible game against the Lions.

Conclusions towards Week 14

The outlook in the AFC continues to be very close, but some teams are beginning to consolidate their positions that have opportune positive streaks. Everything suggests that the Patriots (9-3) and Chiefs (8-4) will be in the playoffs, but the road is still long and stumbles are possible. Likewise, the AFC South is bipolarized in Titans (8-4) and Colts (7-6). At least one of them will be in the postseason.

The other divisions have the majority of their teams in competition. The North is tepidly led by the Ravens (8-4) and with their three remaining franchises in the running. The same is true of the west, but with KC better armed on the field of play. Lastly, the East not only has the Pats, but Bills (7-5) and Dolphins (6-7) are in the running for places in the seeds. As such, we will not have AFC classified teams anytime soon; however, what we will have is a series of games that will set the course for the conference.
