Davante Adams traded his NFL career down a new path this offseason when he requested a trade from the Green Bay Packers to the Los Vegas Raiders, but Hall of Fame wide receiver Michael Irvin doesn’t know if he could have taken the same decision to leave. behind a quarterback of the caliber of Aaron Rodgers.

Irvin recently spoke with the New York Post about the massive contracts being awarded to two of the league’s top receivers, Adams and Tyreek Hill, during the first month of the 2022 league year, saying he’s “happy” to see them. He pushes the limits of the highest-paid receiver in the NFL as the salary cap continues to rise.

To both receivers, however, Irvin seemed surprised that either would willingly leave behind their original systems and the future Hall of Fame quarterbacks who helped them rise to elite territory. He also questioned whether he could have made the same decision for the sake of payday when he played with Troy Aikman for the Dallas Cowboys in the late ’80s and ’90s.

“You left Aaron Rodgers and Patrick Mahomes, I don’t know if I ever could have left Troy Aikman,” Irvin told the Post, noting that he was heard shaking his head on the phone during the interview. “I don’t think he could have done that.”

Irvin fears Adams’ move could backfire

Irvin made it clear that he supports Adams and Hill in continuing to thrive in their new surroundings, and there’s every reason to think they both might. Adams has a built-in connection to Raiders quarterback Derek Carr from their years together in college, while Hill’s blazing speed could easily become the missing ingredient in Miami that helps Tua Tagovailoa finally succeed in his third year as an NFL starter.

However, if the plan fails and Adams and Hill can’t have the same impact they did with their former teams and quarterbacks, Irvin worries they could find themselves in Amari Cooper-like situations in a matter of years.

Here are Irvin’s extensive comments on the Adams and Hills situations:

You can still go live there in your house during the offseason, but I’m not leaving those quarterbacks. Let’s see how this plays out. You make $30 million and you can have houses in two places. I think the most important thing is to take care of what is on the football field.

They had great quarterbacks. I’m interested to see how it works with Tua and Carr, but it’s surely not Mahomes and Rodgers. If you make that move, do you shorten the time you’re making $30 million a year because all of a sudden you’re not having the same impact? This is a meritocracy. If you’re not putting up the numbers to back up that $30 million, they’ll come for you, just like Dallas did with Amari Cooper and her $20 million. It would have been difficult for me to make a business decision about leaving those quarterbacks.
