New York Jets 2021 NFL Season Analysis

By Luis Hernandez@LuisHernz7)

New airs were breathed on the green side of MetLife Stadium during the 2021 NFL Season: the arrivals of HC Robert Saleh and rookie QB Zach Wilson are the beginning of a new era in the New York Jets, a team that generated little hope at the beginning of campaign and is beginning to show signs that reconstruction will take time, but it is the right path.

At the beginning of the season, casinos in Las Vegas owed them an average of six wins; in the end they achieved four, but with better sensations as the campaign closed. Let’s see why and review the season of these new Jets

The 2021 New York Jets season

First let’s look at his numbers according to ESPN:

Offensive: #28 Defensive: #32

By Air: #20 By Air: #30

By Land: #26 By Land: #29

By Points: #28 By Points: #32

The four victories are not surprising seeing those numbers and especially defensively, although it is striking that Saleh came from being the DC of the 49ers.

In week 7, Wilson suffered a knee injury that sidelined him from the field for four games, and during his absence they only won one (34-31 vs. Cincinnati, W8) and he was not the only noticeable casualty: names like T Mekhi Becton (Wilson’s main bodyguard), newcomer WR Corey Davis, rookie WR Elijah Moore and safeties Marcus Maye and Lamarcus Joyner, key players in getting more wins, or at least odds.

The new leader of the franchise, Zach Wilson received a harsh welcome in the NFL; he finished as the QB no. 30 in passing yards (2,334) while throwing just 9 TD passes and 11 interceptions. His worst game was in his home debut in W2 vs. New England, throwing 4 interceptions that day alone; the good side: during his last five matches he did not throw a single INT. Patience and health must be the purposes in 2022 for the overall #2 pick of the last Draft.

In addition to Becton and the others mentioned, RB Michael Carter missed three games, and TE Tyler Kroft missed eight. The lack of options and rhythm due to the lack of repetitions with their main weapons were a reflection of a greatly diminished offense. Mention aside the special teams with WR/KR Braxton Berrios, the only player to stay healthy, which even earned him the only Jets player to be named to the 2021 All-Pro first team.

The Jets’ 2021 season MVP

LB CJ Mosley

After two years out of action (2019 with a groin injury and 2020 on a COVID-19 exempt list) Mosley returned healthy, playing 16 games like the great LB he is: #4 on the league’s leading tacklers with 168, in addition to racking up 2 sacks and 2 forced fumbles.

This should have earned him All-Pro consideration like he has the previous four times: He’s hands down the leader of the defense and the best player on the team in 2021.

Best moment of the Jets’ 2021 season

Just a week after the massacre in Denver (0-26), the Jets faced those who, in the end, would end up as the leaders of the AFC: the Tennessee Titans, who were six-point favorites according to Las Vegas.

Major drama, three exchanges in the lead of the game and despite 157 yards from “King” Derrick Henry, seven sacks to Ryan Tannehill and a game that went into overtime thanks to an FG scored by Matt Amendola and one missed by Randy Bullock, sparked the happiness of Zach Wilson’s first career win,

The worst moment of his season

Although in week 2 the interceptions poker against the Patriots at home had hurt, and a lot; a week later, in Denver against the Broncos, it was the darkest moment of the season for the Jets: 162 total yards, five sacks to Wilson, two interceptions and zero points scored only confirm what can only be classified as a nightmare.

What is expected in the 2022 season?

First of all (and although it may seem obvious), lower the number of injuries. The offense needs reps to build confidence and in the second year of Wilson, Carter and Moore an advance in their chemistry should be shown, adding an OL and a TE to bolster that side of the ball via Free Agency would help a lot and with Draft capital they have (2 picks in the top 10) should take the opportunity to strengthen the defense and help the Williams (Quincy and Quinnen) and Mosley to stop being the worst defense in the league.

We will be very attentive to what happens in the second year of the Saleh-Wilson era at the helm of these Jets that, in a difficult division against some favorite Bills, some reborn Pats and some Dolphins with a new project, is proving to be a crucial season for the growth of this project.
