It could be argued that mike mccarthy will enter the 2022 NFL season sitting in one of the hottest seats of any head coach in the league.
Even before the removal of the Dallas Cowboys in the first round of the playoffs last season, the pressure has been mounting for McCarthy.
It was further marked by offseason rumors swirling around former Saints head coach Sean Payton.

With all that, it’s still a bit surprising to see McCarthy, one of eight active NFL head coaches to win a Super Bowl, rank so low among his peers.
CBS Sports recently released his NFL head coaching rankings ahead of the 2022 season, and McCarthy ranks 18th on the list as he begins his third year as Cowboys head coach.
He’s seven spots short of the next coach with a Super Bowl ring, which is the Jaguars’ Doug Pederson at No. 11.
“The pendulum has probably swung too far in terms of criticizing McCarthy, even if he had Aaron Rodgers in Green Bay,” writes Cody Benjamin of CBS Sports.
“He has now compiled nine different double-digit winning seasons, including 2021 with Dallas. Yet with so much talent at his disposal, poor old-school decisions have too often doomed him. Maybe that’s why team owner Jerry Jones publicly reflected on his staying with the team.”
On the top coaches list, McCarthy is grouped with his old-school teammate Ron Rivera, who ranks No. 19, and the two seem outliers in that area of the rankings, flanked on either side by rookie coaches and one-year-olds. as Brandon Staley (San Diego) and Nick Sirianni. (Philadelphia).
Andy Reid tops the list with 2022 Super Bowl champion Sean McVay in second place and immortal Bill Belicheck in third place.
Not coincidentally, those top coaches were the coaches of three of the last four Super Bowl teams most recently.
Perhaps McCarthy can join the upper echelon of the ranks by adding another ring to his Cowboys resume.
