Micah Parsons is going at record pace, and it will be a problem for the Giants

After his breakout rookie year in 2021, expectations for Micah Parsons were pretty high heading into this season. And, after the first two games, he has not disappointed. Easily the young linebacker has been one of the Cowboys’ best players thus far, if not the best. And this, of course, is bad news for the Giants.

The reason is simple. We saw what happened last Sunday against the Bengals, whose offensive line struggled to protect Joe Burrow. In fact, the quarterback was sacked six times by Dallas defenders, two of them courtesy of Parsons. Now, that’s something that could happen to New York quarterback Daniel Jones as well.

After the first two weeks, Jones has been the third most sacking QB so far, with eight in total. In that statistic he is surpassed by Burrow (13) and Jameis Winston (Saints, 10). Of Jones’ eight sacks, three occurred in the first quarter of a Week 1 game against the Tennessee Titans. This leaves a bad spot for the Giants’ offensive line, which has had trouble protecting its quarterback for years. And this can be used by Parsons.

This is something Giants coach Brian Daboll is aware of. This was revealed during a press conference on Wednesday, where he spoke about the challenge that Micah Parsons poses for the New York team.

“He is a problem”Daboll said of Parsons. “He is a dynamic player, and he can play in multiple positions. You will see him playing as a linebacker or as a defensive end. He has a rare ability as a pass-rusher.”

Because of Parsons’ skills, Daboll knows the offensive line has to be prepared to contain him. And that’s something that will fall mostly to the Giants’ starting tackles: Andrew Thomas and rookie Evan Neal.

“We will have a good plan for him”Daboll added. “(Parsons) is entertaining to watch when you don’t have to prepare to play him. He does some very impressive things on the pitch. Obviously we must know where he will be. But our tackles will also have to do a good job.”

Parsons is on pace to break records

Even if Brian Daboll prepares to contain him, Micah Parsons can increase his defensive stats against the Giants. Through two weeks, the 2021 first-round pick leads the NFL in sacks (4), tackles for loss (4) and quarterback pressure (13). And while the 2021 season is just beginning, this makes him the current favorite to win Defensive Player of the Year.

But that is not all. If Parsons maintains the pace of sacks he started the season with, he could reach his goal of matching or breaking the NFL record for most sacks. Recall that TJ Watt (Steelers) matched Michael Strahan’s 22.5 sacks in 2001 with the Giants. And according to his words a few months ago, Parsons sees it feasible to beat that mark.

On paper, only an injury or some other health issue could keep Parsons from reaching that goal. Speaking of which, the linebacker gave the scare after appearing Thursday in Dallas’ first injury report of Week 3. According to coach Mike McCarthy, Parsons did not practice due to a cold, but tested negative for the virus. Therefore, it is expected that the #11 will be able to play on Monday without problems.

Without a doubt, Micah Parsons aims to once again be the mainstay of the Cowboys’ defense led by Dan Quinn. If he stays that way, the young linebacker could break NFL records in the short term. So it remains to be seen if Parsons increases his sack against the Giants this season. This, of course, while he simultaneously increases the number of sacks received by Daniel Jones this year.
