The Detroit Lions are still looking for upgrades in free agency even though the window has slowed down ahead of the 2022 NFL draft, and the team has received its first major visit in a while.

With lingering holes in defense, the Lions continue to look for upgrades at multiple positions on the field, and one of the most important figures to be in the defensive backfield at safety. Interestingly, the Lions themselves may agree that they have a greater need in the position than some might have expected.

“The Lions welcomed safety DeShon Elliott on a free agent visit today,” Yates tweeted.

Bringing Elliott into the mix would be intriguing for the Lions. He was cut this offseason in Baltimore, and the Ravens don’t normally give up on young, talented players. Elliott has suffered injuries in three of his first four seasons in the league, which could have made Baltimore impatient with him as a player. In 2018 he broke his forearm. In 2019, a knee injury placed him on injured reserve. In late November 2021, a bicep and pectoral injury ended his season.

Despite that, as long as things have been worked out, the Lions could get an intriguing player who has a lot of good football ahead of him and is very young. Elliott was designated the Ravens’ starting safety in 2020 and played there through 2021. To that end, he can get the experience the Lions crave.

Statistics and highlights of Elliott’s career

In terms of his game, Elliott is a solid young player and when he’s been healthy, he’s been a big hit on the field for Baltimore. After being a sixth-round pick by the Ravens in 2017, Elliott has made 109 tackles, 3.5 sacks and 1 interception. He also has 7 passes defensed and 2 forced fumbles under his belt when he played for Baltimore, sometimes in a starting role from 2020 to 2021.

Here’s a look at some of Elliott’s best work in the field:

Nicknamed “The Joker,” Elliott has become a fixture in the Ravens’ secondary when he has played and is a solid player who has youth on his side. If he can work out the injury situation and show that he’s healthy, he could become a potential free-agent steal in this kind of free agency.

Lions safety position still needs a minor boost

This offseason, the Lions entered free agency with much fanfare. Many thought the team would choose to pursue a bigger name like Marcus Williams of the New Orleans Saints. Recently, it has been mentioned that the team has a decent chance of signing Tyrann Mathieu. Despite this, the Lions have gotten smaller at the position, choosing only to bring back starting free agent Tracy Walker. That was a solid move, but Walker could use some depth around him at the position, as well as a potential running mate for 2022. Detroit’s secondary has some young pieces, and a player like Elliott could give them another piece. intriguing to build around the future.

Whether the Lions sign Elliott or not, the team could see themselves as part of the mix for another young defensive back or two in the upcoming NFL draft. This report shows that the team could also be looking for such a player in free agency, which could mitigate their need for an early pick in the next draft.
