Prescott narrowly edged out a trio of honorable mentions for the final spot: Baltimore’s Lamar Jackson, Las Vegas’ Derek Carr and Arizona’s Kyler Murray.

Prescott did not receive a single top-five vote after being the No. 7 quarterback in ESPN’s 2021 league poll.

“Prescott is a good quarterback, but not great; he has to play well in the playoffs,” an NFL executive told ESPN.

“He has to show that he can take them to the next level. He is not on the top step.”

A year after a gruesome compound ankle fracture and dislocation, Prescott started the 2021 season very well.

He led the Cowboys to a 5-1 start, throwing for 1,813 yards and 16 touchdowns while completing 73% of his passes.

Prescott was suddenly in the MVP conversation.

Afterwards, things went downhill.

A calf strain kept Prescott out of the Cowboys’ win over the Minnesota Vikings.

That was the only game Prescott missed all season.

In the final 10 games of the regular season after his return, Prescott threw for 2,636 yards and 26 touchdowns and the Cowboys stumbled into the playoffs.

Prescott and the Cowboys feasted on their division rivals during that stretch, but losses to playoff teams like the Chiefs, Cardinals and Raiders stood out.

Prescott also struggled in the Cowboys’ wild-card round loss to the 49ers, completing 53% of his passes and throwing an interception while his offense recorded just 17 points in an elimination game.

Prescott drew some criticism for his performances in the second half of last season.
