Dallas Cowboys save themselves from mediocrity in the NFL

Barely six weeks have passed into the NFL season and each conference has just six teams with a positive balance.

A league that boasts of parity has been filled with mediocre or very bad teams.

Five clubs have a win, the Lions still don’t know a win and four divisions are almost doomed, barring injuries that keep their top stars out.

Even reigning AFC champion Kansas City is 3-3.

At least the race for the top draft pick offers suspense.

Detroit (0-6) sets the pace, but Houston, Miami, Jacksonville, Giants and Jets have good chances with just one win.

The Dolphins traded their turn with the Eagles, so they won’t benefit from that many losses.

Candidates to fight for the playoffs after closing 10-6 last season, Miami has lost five in a row after allowing the Jaguars to snap a 20-game losing streak on Sunday in London.

Passing on Justin Herbert for Tua Tagovailoa may haunt Miami for a decade.

The Lions are perhaps the best of the contingent, despite a 34-11 loss to Cincinnati.

They brushed past two wins before falling to Baltimore on Justin Tucker’s field goal, with a record 66-yard distance.

Another field goal, 54 yards when the clock ran out, ruled a loss to Minnesota.

If they decide to stick with rookie Davis Mills at quarterback when Tyrod Taylor returns, the Texans would be the favorites for the worst record in the league.

Houston has been outscored by an average margin of 13.3 points per game and it is not yet known what will happen to Deshaun Watson.

Jacksonville had to leave the country for his first win with Urban Meyer and Trevor Lawrence.

Meyer’s transition to the NFL has been turbulent, but the strategist has a franchise quarterback in Lawrence.

The decimated Giants keep losing players and the Rams had no mercy on New York, beating them 38-11.

The East is the worst of the divisions in both the National Conference (NFC) and the American Conference (AFC).

The Cowboys (5-1) victories are equal to Washington (2-4), Philadelphia (2-4) and the Giants.

If Dak Prescott stays healthy, Dallas could wipe out the NFC East before Thanksgiving.

The same with Buffalo (4-1) in the AFC East, all subject to Josh Allen not having any type of injury.

The Bills would surpass New England (2-4), Miami and the Jets’ combined win totals to win in Tennessee on Monday night.

The Patriots are 0-4 at home for the first time in Bill Belichick’s 22 seasons as coach.

The NFL has a handful of elite teams.

Arizona is undefeated 6-0. Tampa, Green Bay, Dallas and the Rams have a combined 20-4 record.

Despite injuries, Baltimore (5-1) has left a good image and the Bills showed that they are going with everything by beating Kansas City last week.

But more clubs have no chance of winning this season.
