Cowboys offense will revolve around Dak Prescott with or without Kellen Moore

DALLAS — The Dallas Cowboys offense will stick with the philosophy of revolving around quarterback Dak Prescott, no matter who the offensive coordinator is on duty, Mike McCarhty said.

The Cowboys head coach said he was more than pleased with Prescott’s performance under any circumstances, after the quarterback has come under fire after finishing his sixth NFL season with a good number of career highs, but with an obvious low of performance compared to the level with which the season began and that was reflected in inaccuracies, reading of the defenses, interceptions and distribution of the ball in the aerial game.

Prescott completed the first of four seasons on the $160 million contract he signed before the start of the 2021-22 schedule.

Offensive coordinator Kellen Moore has worked with Prescott since the quarterback’s arrival in the league in 2016, first as a teammate and then as a quarterbacks coach.

In the most recent weeks, Moore has been interviewed by three teams for their open head coaching jobs.

McCarthy ruled out the idea of taking control of the plays in games, because he believes that the person in charge of installing the offensive system should be the one who decides what strategies to use on the field.

Regarding the controversial last play by the Cowboys in their loss to the San Francisco 49ers, in which, with 14 seconds on the clock, Prescott ran out of time by running to the Cowboys’ 27-yard line, McCarthy said he disagreed with those who say that Prescott should have given the ball to the referees and not to his center in an attempt to get one more play.

“The center can place the ball. The official only has to touch it and the ball can be snapped, as long as it is placed in the right place,” McCarthy insisted.

Cowboys want Ezekiel Elliott back

McCarthy said he hopes to have Ezekiel Elliott next season after the running back played through a knee injury beginning in Game 4 of the regular season, when the Cowboys beat the Carolina Panthers.

“Zeke did a great job, especially with those details that are not reflected in the statistics. I hope he is fully healthy and ready for the next season. He’s a great player,” McCarthy said.

Elliott is not scheduled to have surgery to repair the knee injury.

Soon

– Wide receiver Michael Gallup will have knee surgery in late January. McCarthy said he doesn’t know if he will have him next season, as he becomes an unrestricted free agent.

– Defensive end Chauncey Gholston will have ankle surgery Thursday, as will practice squad wide receiver Brandon Smith.
