The NFL this week announced a portion of the five international games for the 2022 season.

And while the Seahawks weren’t among the teams mentioned, they could still play a game in Germany, London or Mexico City, as they will be rivals with three of the announced host teams.

Specifically, it was announced that the Tampa Bay Buccaneers — a team that Seattle will visit in 2022 — will play the first regular season game of the league in Munich, at the FC Bayern Munich stadium.

Two other teams Seattle will play on the road in 2022, the Arizona Cardinals and the New Orleans Saints, were also selected for international play. The Cardinals will play a game in Mexico City, at the Azteca stadium, and the Saints in London, at the Tottenham stadium.

At least one report has suggested that Kansas City will be Tampa Bay’s rival. But for now, Tampa Bay’s opponent remains a mystery, as the full international match schedule won’t be revealed until the full schedule is announced this spring (likely in May).

The Seahawks have already played one international game, when they defeated the Raiders 27-3 in 2018 at Wembley Stadium in London.

For years, the NFL didn’t require teams to play internationally, but the league now requires all teams to play at least one international game every eight years as part of its efforts to grow the sport outside the United States.

In 2021, the league announced that beginning in 2022, up to four conference teams that have nine home games that year as part of the expanded 17-game regular season — which this year is the NFC — will be designated to play in one game. international as the host team.

Green Bay had been the only team not to have played a game in London before this week’s announcement.

In January, the Seahawks announced that they had obtained approval from the NFL to expand marketing and fan engagement efforts in Canada as part of the NFL’s International Local Marketing Area (IHMA) Initiative.

As part of this effort, the Seahawks announced that they “will also work with the NFL to explore future opportunities to play a regular season game in Canada as part of the new NFL International Series game rotation.”

But no match has been scheduled in Canada yet.
