Betting favors the Chargers over the Broncos

The Chargers visit the Denver Broncos on Sunday in what has become a key game in the AFC West.

The Chargers started the season 4-1 and appeared to be in control of the division with the Chiefs off to a slow start, but have lost three of their last five games to be 6-4, half a game behind the Chiefs who They are 7-4. The Broncos also started fast, going 3-0, but are 5-5 going into this game and in the middle of the race for the AFC wild cards.

Las Vegas forecasts have placed the Chargers as favorites by 2.5 points.

VSiN’s Adam Burke and Dave Tuley explain the best way to bet on this game.

Los Angeles Chargers (-2.5, over / under 48) at Denver, 1:05 pm, CBS

Burke: We know this Denver team’s strength is defense, but offense has worked best when Teddy Bridgewater has been on the field. Historically, the Chargers don’t knock out too many teams and Denver is rarely beaten at home.

The Broncos fall into a pretty standard stretch of Wong Teaser (note; that means you can taunt through the key numbers 3 and 7). Denver would be a good piece with the Dolphins +8.5 or even Pittsburgh to +10. While not a traditional Wong teaser, getting a team to go from 4 to 10 in a match with an expectation of low scores (the Over / Under for that match is only 45 points) makes sense.

Selection: Broncos +8.5 with Dolphins +8.5 (or Steelers +10) in a 6-point difference

Tuley: Like many teams, we wonder which version of the Broncos is going to show up: the one that rolled the Cowboys 30-16 or the one that was rolled 30-13 by the Eagles. The Broncos, with Teddy Bridgewater in the role of preferred underdog after failing as short fave vs. the Eagles are certainly capable of taking down the Chargers. Justin Herbert is great and the Chargers have a big advantage, but they have a tendency to let teams hang around (especially if the Broncos take advantage of the Chargers’ 32nd run defense with Melvin Gordon and Javonte Williams). But again, the oddsmakers have shaded this line a bit too low, so we’ll go the teaser route again. My preference is to use the Broncos as the anchor for a two-team teaser with the Jets +8.5 in Houston early Sunday. If you’re not going to bet until closer to the time of the Chargers game, I would use Vikings +9 which are played at the same time in San Francisco.

Selection: Broncos +8.5 with Jets +8.5 (or Vikings +9) with a difference of six points.
