Baker Mayfield says he doesn’t hold a grudge against the Cleveland Browns

Sports Writing, Jul 12. The quarterback of the Carolina Panthers of the NFL, Baker Mayfield, affirmed this Tuesday that he does not hold a grudge against his former team, the Cleveland Browns, although he looks forward to facing him in the 2022 season.

“I don’t hold a grudge against the Browns, they’re a great institution, but I’m not going to sit like a robot and say I don’t have the game against Cleveland on the calendar,” Mayfield confessed at a press conference.

The Carolina Panthers for whom Mayfield now plays and the Cleveland Browns will play in week one this season.

Mayfield left Cleveland after an injury-plagued 2021 season that culminated in shoulder surgery, the quarterback asking the Browns to be traded as soon as he learned they had signed Deshaun Watson for the 2022 season.

A couple of days ago Mayfield, who spent four years in Cleveland, reached an agreement to play with Carolina, a team with which he offered his first press conference on Tuesday.

“I’m extremely excited about this new beginning. I feel like the team is very close to being very, very good. We just have to put the pieces together and come together as a team. I’m going to be a great leader and a great teammate,” he said.

In Carolina, Baker will fight for the job with Sam Darnold, who came to the NFL for the New York Jets in 2018, a team he stayed with until 2020. He was traded to the Panthers in 2021.

“When you’re at a level as high as the NFL, no one has the mindset to be a backup. We’re at this level because we compete to be the best; that’s why Sam is here. My intention is to be the best quarterback and help the team.”

According to Carolina Panthers general manager Scott Fitterer, the No. 1 quarterback fight between Mayfield and Darnold will be open for the benefit of coach Matt Rhule’s team.

“This is open competition. The reason we added Baker was to improve the group as a whole. Our philosophy is to have competition not just in the quarterback room, but at every position,” Fitterer explained.

A competition that included 23-year-old rookie Matt Corral, selected in this year’s Draft.

“It will be good for Matt, because the young man will be in that same room learning from the experience of Baker and Sam,” said the manager. EFE
