Baker Mayfield became a solution and a reference to the organization of cleveland browns since his arrival to the franchise in the 2018 season, when he was drafted as the first overall pick in the NFL Draft of that year. As a rookie he had an immediate impact and generated encouraging sensations.
However, his days in the northern Ohio city could be over, despite having a current contract for the 2022 campaignfollowing a letter he posted on social media and the Browns’ apparent interest in a troubled but talented quarterback.
In 2020 Mayfield led the Browns to the divisional roundin which they fell against the eventual champions, the Kansas City Chiefsbut at the wild-card stage he gave the Cleveland crowd perhaps the greatest joy since in 2016 LeBron James and his Cleveland Cavaliers turn around a 3-1 deficit in the NBA Finals to defeat the Golden State Warriorswhen the Brows eliminated the Pittsburgh Steelers. The franchise’s first playoff win since 1994.
However, it seems to be very valid that nothing is forever. On Tuesday, through his Twitter account, the quarterback with four years of experience in the NFL, wrote a letter of thanks and that extensive farewell dyes. “With many uncertainties, this is where my head and heart are,” she captioned his message.
“This is not a message with a hidden meaning. This is strictly to thank the city of Cleveland for embracing me and my family…”Mayfield wrote in his letter on Twitter. “I have no idea what happens next, what is the meaning behind the silence I have had for the duration of this process”.
It is true that the 2021 season was full of ups and downs, injuries and misunderstandings on the part of Mayfield with the team, starting in 14 of the 17 games, missing three due to injury, amassing a 6-8 mark and with his lowest total in passing yards (3,010) and touchdowns (17) of his short careerplus 13 interceptions.
But the main reason Mayfield wrote such a heartfelt letter was because the Browns met with deshaun watsonthe talented but troubled quarterback, who in 2020 led the NFL with 4,834 passing yards, but who had up to 22 lawsuits that, in a way still inexplicable to many, has freed, after a grand jury in Harris County, Texas, found in Watson’s favor on nine criminal complaints brought against him. As a result, the criminal proceedings in Harris County have concluded.
It’s unavoidable to say that this is a huge snub for Mayfield from Browns management.
Graduated from the Oklahoma Sooners, Mayfield debuted with 27 touchdown passes in 13 starts in his rookie campaign, finished second in voting for Offensive Rookie of the Year. That number of shipments to the end zone, It’s the most for a first-year player in franchise history.clearly erasing the one established by Otto Graham (member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame), back in 1946.
If this is the end of Mayfield with Cleveland, he would go 29-30 with 14,125 passing yards to rank fourth all-time of the franchise in that line and fifth with 92 touchdown passes.
Below is a list of all the starting quarterbacks who have paraded since the return of the Browns in its second stage, since 1999. For now we don’t know if Baker Mayfield’s stay will be added or extended.
