Ascending, kickoff to the history books

MEXICO CITY.

CWith seven games decided by three points or fewer, more than any Week 1 in league history, the opening weekend captured 121 million fans in the United States.

With the majority of the population unraveling from the coronavirus pandemic and with games that were defined until the clock ran out, the NFL increased its audience by 5 percent compared to last season.

It was an incredible opening weekend, highlighted by a Sunday afternoon filled with exciting finishes and exciting comebacks,” NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said in a press release.

The upline intensified in the afternoon match window with nearly 83 million fans, the highest total since 2016 and a seven percent increase from 2021.

On Sunday night, the long-awaited rematch between the Buccaneers and Cowboys drew a rating of 12.3 and 23.3 million viewers, the highest number since the Giants and Cowboys five years ago when they drew 24.73 million.

Tampa Bay’s victory posted a comfortable surge over the Bears against the Rams last year, which averaged 9.6 and nearly 18 million viewers.

This year marked the second straight Week 1 meeting between the Buccaneers and the Cowboys, who played in last year’s kickoff.

Like last year, the matchup of the league’s biggest star, Tom Brady, and his highest-profile team, Dallas, was the highest-rated and most-watched game of the opening weekend.

The Seahawks’ victory over the Broncos on Monday night averaged 19.793 million viewers. It is the most watched Monday Night Football since the 2009 season.

With parity in most of its games and the most involved people in sports entertainment, the NFL is in better health in its television ratings.
