SAN FRANCISCO – The return of the center of the Golden State Warriors, James Wisemannto game action has been delayed again due to inflammation in the right knee.
Wiseman was unable to practice Friday and Saturday and will not play in any of the Santa Cruz Warriors’ G League games this weekend.
There is no clear timetable for when he will be able to return to team activities.
“We’ll take a break and see how the knee responds from there,” Warriors coach Steve Kerr said.
Kerr said the team hasn’t discussed the idea of writing Wiseman off for the rest of the season, but with just 12 regular-season games remaining, they’re running out of time to get him on the floor.
“We can’t make a decision based on the schedule,” Kerr said. “We can’t make decisions based on the playoffs. Every decision has to be made around James’ career and his future.”
Last month, sources told ESPN that if Wiseman were healthy, he probably wouldn’t be part of the Warriors’ playoff rotation and the focus would be on preparing him to be a factor for them next season. His latest relapse makes this mentality more and more likely.
Wiseman played in just three college games and 39 NBA games before tearing his meniscus last April. He had initial repair surgery that month, but swelling slowed his progress in December, requiring him to undergo a scope procedure.
The latest episode of swelling began a few days ago and caught the team’s attention before Friday practice. It was then that the coaching staff decided that it would be better to remove him from basketball activities.
“I feel terrible for James,” Kerr said. “I’m just going to keep coming back to the fact that he’s 20 years old. He has his whole future ahead of him. We just have to be very, very cautious. We have to do what’s best for him long-term.”
