The Lakers: The Legacy.

“LA Lakers: The Legacy” captures the remarkable rise and unprecedented success of one of the most dominant and iconic sports franchises in professional sports. Through exclusive access to the Buss family and revealing interviews with players, coaches and top executives, this documentary series tells the extraordinary story of this sports empire from the inside out, as told by the people who lived it.

When charismatic real estate mogul Dr. Jerry Buss bought the Los Angeles Lakers in a risky and complex business deal, no one could have predicted the success that would ensue. Kicking off the “Showtime” era in 1979, the celebrated ladyboy of the Los Angeles Lakers was a pioneer in the basketball business. He raised the price of the front rows, introduced dancers and a live band, opened an exclusive private club within the compound, and garnered fans among Hollywood celebrities. Over the past 40 years, the team has won 11 titles and retired the jerseys of some of the NBA’s most legendary players.

Today, Dr. Buss’ sports empire is valued at more than $5 billion. But achieving that success was not easy. Navigating disputes, career-destroying illnesses and a host of insurmountable obstacles on the court, the Lakers also endured intense drama off the court and within Dr. Buss’s own family. Running the franchise as a family business, Dr. Buss gave his children positions on the management team with the understanding that they would one day be the heirs to his kingdom; But sibling rivalries, interpersonal conflicts, and corporate discontent threatened to destroy everything Dr. Buss had worked so hard to achieve. “LA Lakers: The Legacy” is a story about family, business and power, and how all three must be harnessed to achieve greatness.

Lakers CEO and majority owner Jeanie Buss is executive producing the series along with director Antoine Fuqua. Also executive producing are Kevin Mann, Michael Mann and Brendan Bragg of Haven Entertainment, Jeffrey Soros and Simon Horsman of the Los Angeles Media Fund (LAMF) and Lakers senior executive Linda Rambis. Rounding out the team are Emmy® Award winners Jake Pushinsky as series editor and Steven Leckart as series executive producer and writer.
