UdeC presented its squads for the new basketball season

At noon this Friday, the adult men’s and women’s teams from Basket UdeC in the House of Sport with a view to the new sports challenges at the national level.

The appointment was attended by the rector of the university, Carlos Saavedra, the vice-rector for Economic and Administrative Affairs, Miguel Ángel Quiroga, and the head of the Sports Unit, Víctor Méndez.

Saavedra mentioned that “these have been intense and interesting years, with significant progress in both the women’s and men’s leagues.” In addition, she welcomed the new basketball players to the club and thanked them for their commitment and dedication to “combining sports with studies, which is a hallmark that distinguishes both teams: the strong identification with student university activity.”

The two-time champions

With a view to the season that has already begun and that would last until June 2023, the men sought to form a long and competitive squad, with the aim of generating rotations and not physically overloading any player considering the challenges of the year: Copa Chile already in dispute, the Super Cup on the weekend of October 8 and 9 and, later, the National League, the Champions League Americas and a University National.

In that line, Jerry Evans arrived, who already played and in a great way the National League with the foreros, but was registered as the first foreigner for the new season and will also compete in all the other championships.

The only new face, at the moment, is Matías Castro, about whom Cipriano Núñez pointed out that “he is a player I have known for a long time and I wanted to bring him last year. He has already done quite well at this start.”

The DT also announced that Eugenio Luzcando will return at the end of November after playing the Mexican league with Mineros de Zacatecas. On the other hand, Carlos Milano will arrive on October 5 to be part of the Super Cup and Lino Sáez, who was seriously injured last tournament in one of his feet, will return to the courts today.

The fourths want to be first

On the women’s side, Núñez declared that his coaches will seek to improve the campaign of the opening tournament where they obtained fourth place. “We had everything, but sometimes the results don’t come. There were 15 minutes left in the last match and we were champions, but we lost that match,” she noted.

In accordance with that, he pointed out that they are reinforcing the auricielo box. One of the new basketball players is Matilda Román, barely 15 years old, whom they describe as “our prospect. We are excited about her.” The League will start during the first fortnight of October, with a two-wheel zonal phase format. The best four of this stage will enter the playoffs for series to the best of three games. From there will come the “Final Four” and subsequent champion.

And today you will see action. Starting at 4:00 p.m., Campanil will face Universidad La Frontera in a preparatory friendly for the start of the LNF. For their part, and starting at 7:00 p.m., the men will play the second date of the Chile Cup, receiving Truenos de Talca, in what will be their debut at home. On the first day they categorically triumphed against Municipal Chillán.
