Rugby at the Olympics
The Rugby School gave its name to the sport and developed its first rules. The Rugby Football Union was founded in 1871, and the International Rugby Board – now known as World Rugby – was established in 1886. Today there are two categories of rugby that are played around the world: rugby (fifteen players per team ) and rugby at seven. Both have several competitions.
Rugby (fifteen) was played at the Games in Paris 1900, London 1908, Antwerp 1920 and Paris 1924 with men’s teams only, after which there was a long absence of this sport from the Olympic program until it returned, in the format a seven, at the Rio 2016 Games. The women’s category was also included for the first time.
Rugby in Tokyo 2021
12 teams will compete for medals in each of the Tokyo 2020 men’s and women’s competitions.
Historically, New Zealand, known as the All Blacks (men) and Black Ferns (women), is the strongest team in the fifteen-player category. Both teams have an overwhelming win rate: the men have won three out of nine Rugby World Cup tournaments and the women five out of eight.
