The Uruguayan basketball team is contesting the FIBA Qualifying Tournament for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games in the city of Victoria, Canada. It should be remembered that in this sport Uruguay has not participated in this Olympic event since 1984. The national team’s matches can only be seen through the sports signals of the television operator by DirecTV subscribers.
The director of the Latin American Observatory for Regulation, Media and Convergence, Gustavo Gómez, launched a petition on Change.org addressed to the Communications Services Regulatory Unit (URSEC) and the Ministry of Industry so that the basketball matches of the Uruguayan team are broadcast on open television.
The request requests that “due diligence be adopted to enforce the right of access to events of general interest recognized in current legislation, so that the match that this Thursday, July 1, between the official basketball teams of Uruguay and the Czech Republic is broadcast on an open TV channel. It must be extended to other stages of the qualifying process for this tournament. “
In this sense, Gómez refers to the “application of Article 39 of Law No. 19,307 on Audiovisual Communication Services”, as it is a “qualifying instance for an international tournament” of an official basketball team, as established by express text of the current Media Law.
?? Uruguay-Turkey and Uruguay-Czech Republic should be broadcast by an open TV channel. They are “qualifying instances for an international tournament” (Tokyo 2020 Olympics) of an official basketball team, as established by the current Media Law. @Ursec_oficial https://t.co/tBGrLL2qQL
