If you are going to criticize or attack Kevin Durant, you better be prepared to face the wrath of his fingers on Twitter.
On Thursday, the Brooklyn Nets superstar used his keyboard to do what he does best besides playing basketball: clap back. This time, his provocateur turned out to be the six-time NBA champion, Scottie pippen.
In an extensive interview with GQ to promote his new bourbon and his memoirs, Pippen commented on Durant’s performance in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference semifinals. On the off chance that you need a refresher on what happened that fateful night, let me treat you to a quick recap: KD ran an absolute clinic (48 points, 9 rebounds, and 6 assists), setting an NBA record for the most. points in Game 7, but accidentally stepped on the line during what would have been a triple winner and the Nets lost in overtime.
Now, before Durant has had enough time to lick his wounds, Pippen came out to criticize his game and, wait for it, explain why it’s not Lebron James. Pippen’s reasoning? LeBron plays team basketball better.
“KD, as good as his offense was, turned out to be his worst enemy because he didn’t know how to play team basketball,” Pippen said. “He kept trying to go blow by blow.”
The Chicago Bulls legend went on to claim that James would not have been in that position and would have found a way to win. “Have you ever seen LeBron take a shot like that? He’s not going to take that shot. He’s going to be smarter … LeBron would have figured out how to beat them and he wouldn’t have been exhausted and he may not have taken that last shot. LeBron is not KD, and KD is not LeBron. “
As for Durant, who will top the Tokyo roster for Team USA in their third appearance at the Olympics this summer, those are fighting words (get it: induces a feud on social media).
The 2014 MVP was quick to draw attention to the blemishes on Pippen’s resume by questioning the infamous “last shot” incident and debunking Pippen’s claim that he, and not Michael Jordan, was the true leader of the Bulls dynasty.
