The front of the Seattle Storm led the WNBA in scoring for the first time in her career, averaging 21.8 points, and on Tuesday became the first to repeat as The Associated Press Player of the Year.

Stewart received six AP Player of the Year votes from the 10-member media panel, narrowly edging out A’ja Wilson, who received the other four votes. Stewart is the first to win the award back to back since AP voting began in 2016.

“It’s an honor to be recognized as the best in the league,” said Stewart, who also won the award in 2018. “Since I started in the WNBA in 2016, I’ve just tried to get better. Raise my game and the team’s game. It’s a great honor, but it motivates me more and I want to win the championship,” he added.

The fourth-seeded Seattle Storm begins the playoffs Thursday in a best-of-three series against Washington.

The WNBA will announce its league awards during the postseason, which begins Wednesday.

Wilson was selected as the AP Defensive Player of the Year, beating out alyssa thomas Y Natasha Cloud. Wilson was a mainstay on defense with 1.9 blocks and 1.4 steals per game.

On the other hand, Tanisha Wright became the first former WNBA player to win the AP Coach of the Year award. She was one of six former players who were head coaches in the league this season — five led their teams to the playoffs.

“It’s good practice to have former players on the bench, whether they’re head coaches or assistant coaches,” Wright said. “We have put our stamp on the WNBA. I am proud to be part of that group of players who have played in this league and now have impacted it in a different way.”
