Rental car services in Salto with established stop, decreed in October 1931 | Daily Change

By Cary de los Santos
In Montevideo, shortly after the arrival of the automobile, entrepreneurs dedicated themselves to the car rental business settled down. Here in Salto Oriental, the first vehicle registrations were made as “rental cars” and it lasted that way for many years. However, remembering the pioneering entrepreneurs in urban passenger transport “León Jadra Serjans” and “Agustín Souto”, when registering their first buses, they did so as -car-truck and bus- in the “Rental Car Registry” , between the period between the years 1927 and 1930.
DIFFERENCES WITH MONTEVIDEO
The difference with Montevideo was that in Salto Oriental, there was not a company dedicated exclusively to car rental, however many of the owners of the -luxury and large cars- registered as rental cars over time were establishing truck companies or passenger transport companies. Even in the early days, some people from Salta used to transform their large cars into cargo trucks or buses in a rudimentary and traditional way. As it is impossible to mention all the owners of vehicles that were once registered in the “Car Rental Registry of the Municipality of Salteño”, we consider it opportune to rescue from oblivion all the vehicle owners who carried out the “Car Rental Service with Established Stop”, which I will relate below.
ESTABLISHMENT OF THE DECREE
NUMBER 156
On October 13, 1931, the “Representative Assembly” established Decree No. 156, which established and regulated the “Rental Car Services with Established Stops.” The Departmental Administration Council, through the Municipal Inspection, was in charge of keeping the “Registry of Rental Car Owners” and setting the stops at different points in the city of Salto Oriental. This service lasted for many years and was a complement to the “Bus Services”, although the latter was always cheaper and more popular, although, over the years, it favored lowering the prices of vehicles, affecting the increase of the motor park in Salto Oriental, favoring and contributing to making the «Rental Car Service» a more accessible means of transport and not so exclusive to the most privileged classes.
