The League informed the 10 NBA teams with games scheduled for Christmas on Tuesday that there is the possibility of modifying some playing times for the five games scheduled if virus-related problems force changes.
The league told teams the priority is to fill ABC’s windows for Saturday’s games at 2:30 pm, 5 pm and 8 pm ET. For now, the games that will be played at those times are Boston in Milwaukee, Golden State in Phoenix and Brooklyn in the Los Angeles Lakers.
The other games on the Christmas calendar are Atlanta in New York at noon Eastern, and Dallas in Utah at 10:30 pm ET. Both games are scheduled to air on ESPN.
The league called for the notion of changing playing times, which could happen if a game is postponed, a contingency plan in the memo distributed to the teams involved and obtained by ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski. Decisions on whether schedule changes are needed could be made until Friday. Any decision made on Saturday to postpone a Christmas game will not affect the remainder of the day’s schedule, the league reported.
The NBA has postponed seven games so far this season, but none from Wednesday onwards. About 75 players have been dealing with virus-related issues in the NBA this week alone, and more than 100 have done so at least once this season.
Some of the teams scheduled to play on Saturday have numerous players and coaches in their health and safety protocols at this time; The Nets currently have 10 players on that roster, which is the highest known number for any team.
The 10 teams scheduled to play on Christmas had more than 30 players in the protocols Tuesday afternoon, though those numbers can change quickly.
Other major NBA players were added to the protocol list on Tuesday, including Fred VanVleet from Toronto and his Atlanta teammates Danilo gallinari Y Clint capela, who joined a list of the Hawks that already included Bring young. The league is allowing teams to sign replacements to hardship contracts when a player tests positive for the virus, in the hope that such moves could minimize the need for postponements.
