IPN offers a public apology for the femicide of ‘Marychuy’ Zamudio

“In a few days María de Jesús, Marychuy would be 25 years old, she would already be an oil engineer and would surely be part of the National Basketball Team, surely she would be madly in love, working hard or trying to do it in some state of the Republic, surely Marychuy would be very happy. as it was.”

“But Marychuy is not an engineer, nor will she continue to play, nor will she be a mother, nor will she be a successful Mexican, and in Mexico only a few girls and young women have the opportunity to dream and fight for those dreams and very few of them can achieve it” , this is how Yesenia Zamudio began the response to the public apology of the National Polytechnic Institute (IPN), for the omissions in the case of the young woman who died on January 24, 2016, a victim of the injuries caused after being thrown from the fifth floor of the department where he lived.

Yesenia, like many other mothers of murdered daughters, has become a researcher and an activist, whose claim even led her to be one of the women who originally took over the facilities of the National Human Rights Commission headquarters in September 2020. However, , despite her public notoriety, considers that the greatest advance in her daughter’s case was recommendation 9/2019 of the Mexico City Human Rights Commission regarding the treatment of her daughter’s case and other cases.

“By means of that recommendation, it was possible that today there is already a prosecutor specialized in femicides that did not exist, which was not a prosecutor that emerged thanks to the good will of the head of government, nor of the prosecutor in turn, it was thanks to the recommendation of Human Rights of Mexico City”, said Yesenia in an interview for Excelsior.

“By having a prosecutor specialized in femicide, an investigation can be carried out with a correct gender perspective, mainly in my case, the femicide of my daughter, which was what I asked for, that they have specialized personnel and that is what the recommendation indicates,” he added. .

On IPN public apology She pointed out that it was something she expected but that it was not a gift, but a demand that cost her and her family six years of struggle.

“I think that they are not enough (the measures that the Polytechnic has taken), I think that they have a lot to do and I think that the first step is that they accept that they failed at the time and that is why Marychuy is no longer with us, because they did not attend neither before nor after what happened to my daughter and my family,” said Yesenia.

“I think it is a commitment, I think they are going to work on it and I hope to see it, because today I have not seen anything from the Polytechnic, more than an apology that is nothing more than a requirement that they had to cover, but I think I had a lot to owe”, he considered.

About the posthumous title that the IPN will issue and the chair that will be created in memory will receive it, since he assured that his daughter must be recognized by the Institute.

“It would have been better if Mary received it in life, but in any case I am going to accept it and the chair to which they committed themselves as well and hopefully they give us the guarantee of non-repetition, that there is no other student going through something similar ”.

And precisely the guarantee of non-repetition and an exemplary conviction, coupled with the arrest of the two alleged perpetrators of her daughter’s femicide, is what would give Yesenia an approach to justice for the loss of Marychuy.

“One day I would like to return to my life without having to feel this pain and this fear that my daughter’s murderers are free and that they could also harm me. I have received multiple threats mainly from her relatives.”

The two arrest warrants and red cards for the crime of femicide are against the former teacher Julio Iván “N”, who taught the introductory drilling class; and of Gabriel Eduardo “N”, student of the IPN.

María de Jesús Jaimes Zamudio was a graduate of the Colegio de Bachilleres and was studying Topographical Engineering and Photogrammetry at the Higher School of Engineering and Architecture (ESIA), a scholarship holder and member of the school’s basketball team, and participated in cultural activities. She was 19 years old and would have turned 25 on April 5.
