From October 21 to 23: Puerto Varas will host the South American Basketball League

Organizational challenges include obtaining financing and repairing the Municipal Coliseum to host the competition.

Last Saturday the good news was announced that Puerto Varas will be one of the headquarters of the South American Basketball League, thanks to the classification of Atlético Puerto Varas in these instances and the application made by the club to host one of the groups of the South American League.

There are 16 teams that will play in the South American League, who will face each other in groups of four, in four different venues during the month of October.

Group A, which will play at the headquarters of Corrientes, Argentina, on October 7, 8 and 9, is made up of the Corrientes Regatas Club (Arg), Deportivo San José (PY), Urunday Universitario Club (URU) and Baurut Basket (Bra).

Group B will play at the headquarters of Isla Margarita in Venezuela, on October 14, 15, and 16, and is made up of the clubs: Guaiqueries Foundation of Venezuela, Sport Club Corinthians Paulista of Brazil, Tigrillos de Antioquia of Colombia and the Campéon of Bolivia to be confirmed.

Group C is the one that is based in the city of Puerto Varas and will be played on October 21, 22 and 23. The members of this group are Atlético Puerto Varas, Club San Martín from Argentina, Obera Tennis Club from Argentina and Club Atlético Olimpia from Uruguay.

Group D will be based in Barranquilla, Colombia; It will be played on October 28, 29 and 30 and the teams Titanes de Barranquilla de Colombia, Spartanos DF de Venezuela participate. Club Atlético Paulistano Corpore from Brazil and Club Punto Rojo LR from Ecuador.

Carlos Moraga, Atlético general manager, commented to El Heraldo Austral regarding this achievement of being the headquarters of the South American Basketball League that “it is a tremendous pride and a tremendous responsibility for us as a club and for the board of directors and the city to host the South American Basketball League in its 25th edition, due to the importance of being the most important sporting event in the region in recent years and we want to put the name of Chile in place and, organizationally, the name of the city as well ” .

Organization Challenges

“The most important challenge we have now – Moraga continued – is to achieve the different support we need, both from our mayor and the municipal council, because obviously significant financial support is required, as well as infrastructure for our coliseum to meet the conditions. that the International Federation requests and is fit for the practice of basketball ”.

“We have also started a round of meetings with the regional authorities, with our Regional Governor, also with the Ministry of Sports because we think that if all the entities collaborate to the best of their ability, we will be able to make this event a historic landmark of the city and a tremendous showcase, both tourist and gastronomic, with all the visitors who are going to arrive and with the television broadcast for all of America ”.

It should be noted that the venue for this competition should be the Municipal Coliseum due to its larger size compared to the Fiscal Gymnasium and because it has retractable rings that are requested by the International Federation, however, the serious problem of this venue is its Roof that, being in poor condition, causes several leaks within the sports complex that make it impossible to properly practice any sport.
