A new palace for Chilean sports – La Tercera

Universidad Católica continues to show itself as a sports reference nationwide. The latest proof of that has been the inauguration of its new Sports Building. An enclosure of 15 thousand square meters, which will house the basketball, volleyball, triathlon and swimming branches. A change that is also explained by Santiago 2023 and by the great objective of the CDUC: to be the first sustainable club in the country.

“With this new venue we seek to provide the best facilities for our athletes. We want the sports practice of the club to be supported in the best possible way. With the best equipment and technology that we can provide ”, the president of the CDUC, José Manuel Vélez, tells El Deportivo.

The sports work is located in the north of the San Carlos de Apoquindo stadium, following the logic that all the club’s facilities are located on the Las Flores ring road. Specifically, this new space has a gym for volleyball and basketball, as well as a 50-meter heated pool and a support area that contains dressing rooms, gym, sportlab, medicine and corporate offices. The existing facilities, meanwhile, will be remodeled and expanded for the Tennis branch. A special sport for the club, since the ATP 250 of Chile has been doing there. An event that Vélez himself confirmed that in 2022 will also take place in San Carlos.

Another of the great pluses of this new construction is the CDUC’s plan to become the first sustainable club in the country. “Since last year we have been in this project, in which it is sought that Católica in a few years can be a zero waste club. The objective is that all the waste generated here can be reused, compostable or can follow a circular economy ”, explains Vélez.

In this sense, the afforestation of San Carlos de Apoquindo is also planned with 10,000 species of native trees and shrubs, as well as social activities for the benefit of communities affected by social phenomena.

“We have been in talks with the Santiago 2023 Corporation for a long time and we have agreed that both rugby seven and mountain biking will be held at our facilities. But obviously we will always be willing to provide our spaces if the organization needs it. The building will always be available ”, emphasizes the club president.

In the event that finally only those two categories are held in the foothills, the new building will likewise be occupied by the participants during the competition days. Catholic thinks big. Your planning and objectives prove it.
