Zaidi spoke about Correa’s pact with SF that did not materialize

Ten days after the Giants’ deal with Carlos Correa for 13 years and $350 million with the star shortstop collapsed due to medical issuesthe president of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi spoke publicly about the situation in a virtual press conference in which he described what happened as “frustrating” and disappointing.

The Giants were scheduled to introduce Correa at Oracle Park on December 20, but the event was canceled with three hours to go before the event. According to various reports, the San Francisco Ninth, the Giants were concerned about Correa’s operated right leg. Representative Scott Boras at one time agreed to a 12-year, $315 million deal with the Mets.

“We’ve had some talks since then, but we understand they’re focused on a deal elsewhere at this time,” Zaidi said. “Therefore, I think the possibility of them reaching an agreement with us at this point is unlikely given the position they are in.”

Correa underwent arthroscopic surgery to repair a fractured right fibula in 2014, when he was a 19-year-old prospect on the Astros’ farm. But Zaidi hinted that the Giants found new information during Correa’s physical that wasn’t in his file.

According to Zaidi, the Giants were quick to communicate their concerns to Boras. The parties spoke by phone as soon as Boras’ plane landed in San Francisco at 5 pm PT on December 19, the day of Correa’s physical.

Despite what happened, Zaidi said he’s confident the Giants will be in a position to fight next season after the acquisitions of Mitch Haniger, Michael Conforto, Taylor Rogers, Sean Maneaea and Ross Stripling.

Said the executive, “It’s disappointing, but at the same time we are turning the page and we are excited about the players we have that we will continue to add. That will be our focus now that the calendar is moving to 2023.”
