It is expected that New York Yankees waste no time contacting the representatives of the star free agent first baseman Freddie Freemana person with knowledge of the situation told NJ Advance Media on Thursday.
The person spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly.
“It’s definitely still on the table,” the person said of the interest of the New York Yankees about Freeman.
While the Yankees have Luke Voit on the roster, Freeman is considered one of the best in the game at the position. Freddie Freemana five-time MVP, hit .300 with 31 home runs, 83 RBIs and an .896 OPS in 159 games last year for the Braves.
The Yankees have been looking to balance a lineup that had plenty of righties last season, and Freeman’s lefty hit could damage Yankee Stadium’s short right-field porch.
Atlanta has been home to Freddie Freeman for 12 seasons and helped them win a World Series in 2021. But the 32-year-old and the Braves couldn’t come to a long-term deal before the lockout began Dec. 2. The Dodgers are also expected to approach Freeman.
Atlanta reportedly offered Freeman a five-year, $135 million deal, but the California native could be looking to secure a deal worth close to $200 million over six years.
With the luxury tax threshold raised to $230 million thanks to the new collective bargaining agreement, the Yankees are expected to top their 2021 payroll of $209 million.
