Yankees: Steve Sax on whether it was worse working for ‘Boss’ Steinbrenner or Mr. Burns from The Simpsons

If someone built a reputation as an uncompromising boss and almost a dictator during his time in MLB it was the very “Boss” George Steinbrenner, late owner of the New York Yankees that revitalized the franchise after acquiring it in the 70’s, and during which time the Bronx Bombers won 7 World Series championships under quite questionable methods. However, those who worked with him keep a lot of I respect his passion for the Yankees.

One of those who worked under him was second baseman Steve Sax, who played for the Yankees from 1989 to 1991, and also had a “boss” much like Steinbrenner in The Simpsons’ Mr. Burns, who “hired him. “in 1992 for the softball team at the Springfield nuclear plant along with other great leagues such as Roger Clemens, Ken Griffey Jr. and José Canseco.

In a recent interview for MLB Network Radio, The Simpsons executive producer Al Jean asked Sax who “was the worse boss,” George Steinbrenner or the “money devil,” Monty Burns.

I was in the Yankees for three years and I heard all kinds of rumors about Steinbrenner, that he was crazy, that he would be in the clubhouse every day, and things like that. Out of the three years I was there, I only saw him twice in the clubhouse, and on one of those occasions was after he heard rumors that we didn’t like the clubhouse, we went on tour in 10 days and the clubhouse was completely renovated.

At the end of the day, it seems that Steinbrenner was a better boss than Mr. Burns and the rumors about “The Boss” were not so true.

I started as a rookie on Al Bat in early 2018 and I’m going into my third season covering Major League Baseball as a web reporter. I am a fan of the San Francisco Giants, a number one defender of Barry Bonds and a critic of the Los Angeles Dodgers. Fernando Tatis Jr., Juan Soto and Ronald Acuña are the future of baseball, Mike Trout is overrated, and the Astros deserved to be taken away from the World Series for cheating. Besides baseball, I also enjoy soccer, football, basketball, and just about any other game that includes a ball or a ball. I am also an amateur musician, penniless gamer and very nerdy. Graduated in journalism from the University of Guadalajara, I graduated in 2017. Born in the shrimp capital of the world, Escuinapa, Sinaloa. I lived in Australia for a while; i survived giant spiders, tasmanian devils and fought a kangaroo and didn’t die trying.
