Yankees put Jonathan Loaisiga on injured list

The New York Yankees placed the coach Jonathan Loaisiga on the 10-day disabled list Sunday for a right rotator cuff strain.

Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Loaisiga will not pitch for at least 10 days.

“Obviously that’s a difficult setback for us that hopefully it will only be a couple of weeks, but it is still something that we will have to navigate,” Boone said.

Boone told reporters that he hopes the Yankees can get Loaisiga back this season.

“Hopefully this is a bit of a timeout and we’ll make it up for the home stretch,” Boone said.

Loaisiga is 9-4 with a 2.25 ERA in 68 innings pitched this season, striking out 66 batters while walking just 15. He has 18 holds and five saves. Loaisiga’s 68 innings pitched are his most since he pitched 68⅔ innings in 2013 in the Dominican Summer League as a minor league player for the San Francisco Giants.

He last pitched Friday against the Baltimore Orioles, when he allowed a home run to tie the game at Jorge Mateo in the seventh inning to give him his fourth unsuccessful save of the season. Mateo’s home run was only the third that Loaisiga has allowed this season.

Loaisiga received a cortisone injection after feeling pain on Saturday and underwent an MRI scan, which revealed her injury.

The Yankees called the right Albert Abreu of Triple-A Scranton / Wilkes-Barre in a corresponding move.

New York started the day atop the American League wild-card standings, half a game ahead of the Boston Red Sox.
