the veteran third baseman Josh Donaldson is under consideration to be the leadoff hitter for the New York Yankees, according to manager Aaron Boone. Newsday reporter Erik Boland relays words from the captain, who had this to say about the idea:
A guy who controls the strike zone like he does, the ability to come up, power, great hitter…yeah, he’s definitely someone I’d consider.”
Boone is certainly right about the 26-year-old Donaldson’s on-base skills, as the slugger has posted an above-average walk rate in each of the past nine seasons:

Since 2013, Donaldson has drawn at least 73 walks in all but two seasons (one that was shortened in 2020 and one in 2018 when he was injured). Sure, in all those nine seasons he’s struck out more than he walks, but he’s got pretty good eyesight — he’s traded at least 100 BBs twice.
