World Classic and international games stand out in Major League labor agreement

The celebration of the World Baseball Classic in 2023 stands out in the international plan developed by Major League Baseball and that was approved as part of the new labor agreement between the owners and the players union.

The event that brings together the best Major League Baseball players will celebrate its fifth edition in March 2023. The event was originally scheduled for March 2021, but was canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic. The last time the event was held was in March 2017, when the United States beat Puerto Rico in the final match.

In addition to competition at the national team level, in the agreement MLB outlined its schedule of games outside the United States and for the next four years it plans to hold games in Mexico City, the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico, among other destinations in Europe and Asia.

MLB’s international plan was released by a reporter from The Athletic portal on his Twitter account this Wednesday.

In the document, it is stated that the first international clashes would be in the 2022 postseason in Korea and Taiwan.

For 2023, the World Baseball Classic appears during spring training, although the venues are not specified.

The Mexican capital will host regular season games in the month of May from 2023 to 2026.

London would host games again in June 2023, 2024 and 2026, while Paris would host games for the first time in its history in June 2025.

The Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico would host spring training games in 2024, while in September 2025 and 2026 official matches would take place on Isla del Encanto.

There have been several teams that have played in Mexican territory and among the cities that have hosted the clashes are precisely Mexico City and Monterrey.

Some of the teams that have been in Mexico are the New York Mets and the San Diego Padres, who precisely met in Nuevo León in 1996, which meant the first Major League regular season series outside the United States.

Teams like the Pittsburgh Pirates have played in Mexico against the Tampa Bay Devil Rays in 2001, while in 2003 the Los Angeles Dodgers played against the New York Mets and the following year the Houston Astros played against Florida Miami.

San Juan’s Hiram Bithorn Stadium has hosted more than 50 major league official and spring training games, and even became a temporary home for the Montreal Expos, hosting 44 official games between the 2003 and 2004 seasons.

The Quisqueya Stadium in Santo Domingo has hosted several spring training games, the most recent being on March 7, 2020, when the Minnesota Twins and Detroit Tigers met.
