Why should the Yankees sign Marcus Semien and not Correa, Seager and other high-caliber SS?

If there is a position on the field of play that Yankees urge them to reinforce heading into the 2022 season of Big leagues, it is clear that we should aim for the short stops. Fortunately for the New York office, the next winter will be packed with heavy-caliber shortstop in free agency.

Carlos Correa (Astros), Corey seager (Dodgers), Javy Báez (Mets), Trevor Story (Rockies) and Marcus semien (Blue Jays) will be the hottest shortstop of the winter trading season, and of course, more than one is sure to be on the Bronx Mules’ radar.

Any of the above five would likely play a good role in the Yankees shortstop, not just on defense, but on the bat as well. But only one of them is the one who would best sign the board, because due to his age it seems that it would be the least expensive contract and the one that would give the organization the most flexibility so that the prospect number one, shortstop, Anthony Volpe, finished developing in Minor Leagues.

Given that Marcus Semien just turned 31 years old, this shortstop profile is the best fit among the Yankees’ signing options. Compared to the other four high-end, who are between the ages of 27 and 28, Semien may be the one who asks for the fewest years of contract and money. In a regular season with the Blue Jays, he finished third in home runs (45) and was selected to the All-Star Game in July held in Colorado.

In addition, these would give Volpe time to consolidate and finish polishing his skills on the Yankees farms. The 20-year-old is already compared to legend Derek Jeter and is expected to be the everyday shortstop in New York for years to come.

This 2021 in Class A and A +, Volpe ended up hitting .294 / .423 / .604, with 27 homers and 86 RBIs. But that’s not all, he also took the number one spot from Dominican Jasson Domínguez, on the club’s list of best prospects.
