White Sox beat Pirates and come out of the pothole

PITTSBURGH, Pennsylvania, USA – Yasmani Grandal hit a two-run double and the Chicago White Sox snapped a five-game losing streak by beating the Pittsburgh Pirates 4-3 on Wednesday night.

Leury Garcia added a home run to help the AL Central leaders end their longest losing streak of the season.

Chicago starter Dylan Cease (6-3) bounced back from a poor performance in his previous outing to work 5 2/3 innings, allowing one earned run and striking out seven.

Liam Hendricks retired in order in the ninth inning for his 19th save of the season.

Grandal’s two-out double in the fifth inning broke a tie and ended the performance of Pirates starter Chase De Jong (0-2).

Garcia opened the second inning with his first homer of the season, a slam between left and center field on the first pitch.

Chicago outfielder Luis Gonzalez had his first major league hit, a hit from two corners in the second inning and scored on Tim Anderson’s double. González had his first start with the White Sox, who are trying to cover the absence of Adam Engel, who was placed hours earlier on the disabled list.

Pittsburgh rang twice in the second inning after Cease made two mistakes while trying to field a De Jong bunt with Michael Perez at first. Cease dropped the ball and then made a poor shot, allowing the runners to move to second and third.

Adam Frazier grounded RBI and Ke’Bryan Hayes hit the plate with a single to make it 2-2.

For the White Sox, Cubans Grandal 4-1 with two RBIs; Yoán Moncada 4-1; José Abreu 4-0. Dominican Leury Garcia 5-1 with an RBI and a run scored. The Mexican Luis González 3-1 with one scored.

For the Pirates, the Dominicans Gregory Polanco 4-1; Erik González 1-0. Puerto Rican Michael Pérez 4-1 with a run scored.
