There are several things that have gone wrong for the New York Mets in recent days, including injuries by Jacob DeGrom and Francisco Lindor, who have already been disabled, but also about the playing field of MLB, trend that continued in the first inning of Sunday’s game against the Pittsburgh Pirates at PNC Park.
Trailing 3-0 on the scoreboard and with one out in the first inning, the bases loaded and right-hander Taijuan Walker on the mound, the Mets allowed three more runs with a hit to Kevin Newman’s infield.
Walker quickly went to find Newman’s soft bruise as the ball skimmed past the third foul line and nudged it into the Pirates’ dugout. But to his surprise, the hit was judged good by plate umpire Jeremy Riggs.
After the ball was called good, the Mets were slow to react, with Walker and Puerto Rican catcher Tomás Nido standing in front of the plate and JD Davis watching between third and home plate. John Nogowski, the Dominican Gregory Polanco and the Puerto Rican Michael Pérez took the opportunity to score and put the market 6-0.
The Dominican Luis Rojas, manager of the Mets, came out to angrily claim Riggs and was soon expelled.
Walker left the game after getting a single out, allowing six runs and four hits and walking four, including one to JT Brubaker, the Pirates’ starter.
