The Rays player easily outvoted Emmanuel Clase and Jesús Sánchez

Tampa Bay Rays shortstop, Wander Franco, was selected this Wednesday as the Rookie of the Year of the Dominican Republic, in the twenty-second edition of the recognition granted by the national sports chronicle to its players in the Major Leagues.

Franco won the award by obtaining 201 points, thanks to his 17 first-place votes, 3 second-place votes and 1 third-place vote, beating Emmanuel Class (4 first place votes) from Cleveland and Jesus Sanchez (9 second votes) from Miami.

The Baní native participated in 70 games in the 2021 season, finishing with a .288 batting average, 81 hits and 7 home runs in 281 at-bats.

He also added 5 triples and 18 doubles, negotiating 24 bases per poles to obtain an OBP of .347. Franco thanked the distinction in his social networks.

During his historic campaign, Franco equaled a record of 43 consecutive games reaching at least one base, a mark held by the legendary Frank Robinson, for players 20 years old or younger.

Wander Franco was third in the race for Rookie of the Year in the American League in MLB, behind his teammate Randy Arozarena, winner of the award, and Astros pitcher Luis García, second.

2021 continued to be a great year for the Dominican shortstop as he obtained a million-dollar contract extension prior to the Major League lockout for 12 years and around $185 million dollars.

In the voting for Dominican Rookie of the Year, other players who received votes were Bryan de la Cruz, Yermín Mercedes and Kelvin Gutiérrez.

The JJ Sports company is the organizer of the award ceremony, which will also award the awards to the best offensive player, best pitcher and the most valuable player of the 2021 Major League season.
